Herb Alpert
Herbert "Herb" Alpert (born March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American trumpeter , musician and founder of the record label A&M Records .
life and career
Alpert grew up in a small Jewish settlement in West Los Angeles. He had some great instrumental hits with his band The Tijuana Brass in the 1960s. The first success was The Lonely Bull in 1962, followed by Tijuana Taxi , Spanish Flea , A Taste of Honey , Zorba the Greek and others. Alpert is considered to be the creator of the Tijuana brass sound, which combines traditional Mexican style of playing with jazz and funk .
In 1968 his first vocal hit This Guy's in Love with You came out, which reached first place in the US singles chart on June 22, 1968 and held this place for four weeks. After breaking with the Tijuana Brass Band, Herb Alpert was quiet until the comeback with the album Rise , which made it into the charts in 1979, and the released single Rise became his first instrumental hit at number one on the charts.
In 1987 the modern jazz funk vocal tracks Keep Your Eye on Me and Diamonds (in which Janet Jackson took over the vocal part) had success. Alpert subsequently recorded some solo parts on the artist's records. Together with Lou Adler and Sam Cooke he wrote Cooke's hit (What A) Wonderful World (1960).
72 million records were sold and he received eight Grammy Awards. With Jerry Moss he founded the record label A&M Records in 1962 . With this company he not only produced his own music, but also had the Carpenters , Cat Stevens , Liza Minnelli , Joe Cocker , Supertramp , Joe Jackson , The Police , Sting , Suzanne Vega , Carole King , Bryan Adams , Chris de Burgh and others Janet Jackson under contract.
He is also a painter, theater producer and looks after his “Herb Alpert Foundation”, which is dedicated to humanitarian causes and regularly donates large amounts for them.
Herb Alpert has two children with his divorced wife Sharon Lubin. He has been married to the singer Lani Hall since 1973 and has a daughter with her.
In 1994, the Alpert Awards in the Arts was awarded by the Herb Alpert Foundation (prize money: 75,000 US dollars).
