Helen Sung (* Houston ) is an American jazz - pianist and composer .

Helen Sung has Chinese ancestry; she began her musical training on piano and violin and attended Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts . She then continued her studies in classical piano at the University of Texas at Austin , where she received her Masters. During this time she first came into contact with jazz; In 1995 she was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music ; there she studied a. a. with Ron Carter and Roland Hanna . After graduating in 1997, Sung worked briefly on the Boston jazz scene before moving to New York City . There she played in the band of saxophonist Gregory Tardy , and also worked with Lonnie Plaxico , Steve Wilson , Scott Tixier and Kenny Grohowski . She has recorded a number of albums under her own name with her own formations since the early 2000s, and in 2004 her debut album Push was released on Fresh Sound Records . In 2006 she received a scholarship for a chamber music work; In 2007 she won the Mary Lou Williams Competition at the Kennedy Center and appeared on Marian McPartland's NPR Piano Jazz Show.

Helen Sung lives in New York City. She has also worked with Slide Hampton , Benny Golson , Buster Williams , Wayne Shorter , Regina Carter , played in the Mingus Big Band , Clark Terry's Young Titans of Jazz Big Band, with TS Monk and Steve Turre . Sung is currently (2019) leading the (re) Conception Project , which includes Ingrid Jensen , John Ellis , David Wong and Terreon Gully .
