The University of Texas at Austin , often shortened to University of Texas , UT or Texas , is the largest university in Texas and the main campus of the University of Texas System . It was founded in 1883 and is the fifth largest university in the USA with 50,201 students (2008). The UT Austin is one of the best state universities in the USA, a so-called Public Ivy . She is also a member of the Association of American Universities , an association of leading research-intensive North American universities that has existed since 1900. UT Austin has produced a total of 12 Nobel Prize winners , most recently in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The university consists of a 1.4 km² campus in an urban location as well as various branches such as the JJ Pickle Research Campus. UT Austin is also an outstanding center for academic research with an annual third-party budget of over 400 million US dollars.

Numerous European writers have held guest lectureships in Austin, for example Lars Gustafsson , Peter Rühmkorf and many others.

Ranking

In their controversial university rankings, The Times Higher Education Supplement listed the university at 26th place in 2005, and 15th in 2004, but dropped to 51st in 2007. In 2019 and 2020, the University of Texas, Austin, ranks 38th and continues to be among the top 50 universities in the world . In the Shanghai Ranking , also Academic Ranking of World Universities, the University of Texas, Austin, ranks 40th in 2018 and 45th in 2019. Within the USA, the University of Texas, Austin, ranks 22nd (as of 2019) and thus belongs to the best universities in the country. The School of Law of the University of Texas finished in accordance with the relevant US News rankings in 2018 to 14th place and thus belonged to the T14 law schools , in 2019 and 2020 it occupies as in previous years, the place 16th
