In 1983, Michael Dell began selling computer components. In 1984 he founded PCs Limited with $ 1,000 in seed capital , later renamed Dell Computer Corporation . The company was based in Austin , Texas at the time . 1985 the first own PC was developed.

In 1987 the company expanded to Great Britain and thus operated outside the USA for the first time. In 1988 the company went public . A total of 3.5 million shares were sold for approximately $ 8.50. In the same year, Dell began to supply major customers. In 1989 Dell opened a factory in Ireland for the European market. In 1990, Dell products were also sold through dealers for the first time.

In 1991 the company's first notebook was added to the range. In 1993 group sales exceeded one billion US dollars. Since 1996, Dell products can also be ordered over the Internet . The last-mentioned factor in particular ensured strong company growth. In 2000, daily Internet sales were $ 5 million. However, the dot-com bubble caused growth to collapse at Dell; As a result, the company had to cut 5700 jobs in 2001. In 2003 annual sales reached $ 40 billion. The company started selling printers under its own name and consumer electronics . In 2003, Dell established the Business Center in Bratislava ( Slovakia ).

The company has been represented in Germany since 1988. The company currently has around 2000 employees in Germany, around 1000 in Halle (Saale), 600 in Frankfurt am Main and 100 in Munich . On August 1, 2005, the headquarters of Dell GmbH was relocated from Langen to the Main Airport Center in Frankfurt am Main . On September 1st, 2005, Dell opened a new service and sales center in Halle to support medium-sized customers and public clients.

In 2006, the company began one of the largest product recalls in computer history after several Dell laptops caught fire due to defective batteries from Sony . Also in 2006, Dell took over the computer manufacturer Alienware ; the company continues to operate as an independent subsidiary of Dell. In the same year, Dell hired the thousandth employee in Germany.

In September 2006, desktop PCs with processors from AMD were added to the range for the first time in the company 's history, after the company had previously only installed processors from Intel in this segment .

After production in Ireland was discontinued in 2009, the European production facility is located in Łódź, Poland . It extends over 37,000 square meters and represents an investment of 200 million euros. In addition, there are further investments by suppliers of the US company amounting to 53 million euros. Today Dell employs around 1200 people in Łódź. The aim of setting up a plant in Europe was to improve delivery to the European market, which in turn resulted in a delivery time that was approx. Two days shorter for German customers. In December 2009, Dell announced that the Polish plant would be sold to the Taiwanese company Foxconn , if the European Union agrees. However, the sale to Foxconn did not materialize.

In September 2009, Dell acquired IT service provider Perot Systems Corp. for around $ 3.9 billion or $ 30 per share in cash. In February 2010, Dell acquired the US company KACE, a provider of systems management solutions.

In August 2010, Dell launched its first tablet computer " Streak ". The device has a 5-inch touchscreen and can be used for surfing the Internet, making calls, navigating, listening to music and using it as a camera. Dell uses Google's Android as the operating system . In early 2011, Dell presented the Streak 7, which has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 800 × 480. This device has also been available in Germany since April 2011. In March 2011, Dell launched its first smartphone, the Venue Pro, on the German market. The smartphone works with the Windows Phone 7 operating system and has a sliding keyboard.

In March 2012, Dell announced the acquisition of SonicWall, a company specializing in firewalls and network security.

In July 2012, Dell took over software manufacturer Quest for $ 2.4 billion.

Dell is one of the first supporters of the FIDO alliance , which has been developing the Universal Second Factor (U2F) industry standard for generally applicable two-factor authentication since 2013 .

In September 2013 Michael Dell bought his company back for 24.9 billion US dollars (18.1 billion euros ) together with the financial investor Silver Lake and now runs it as sole owner. The company's shares were delisted from NASDAQ on October 30, 2013.

On October 12, 2015 Dell announced the storage specialists EMC for 67 billion US dollars to take over. This merger was implemented in September 2016. Following the merger of the company was Dell Inc. in Dell Technologies Inc. changed. Since then, Dell has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the abbreviation DVMT in the form of a tracking stock , which embodies the share in VMware .

strategy

Dell mainly uses components from other manufacturers and therefore does not develop its own hardware, with the exception of the layout of the motherboards. Dell currently delivers its computers and notebooks with one of the operating systems Windows 10 , Windows 8 and Windows 7 or with Linux ( Ubuntu ). Servers are also delivered preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Server , VMware or Linux ( Red Hat or SUSE Linux ) upon customer request.

Due to the poor earnings situation, Dell initiated a fundamental change in its sales strategy in May 2007 . In addition to direct sales, customers have also been approached via sales partners and retailers since then . In the USA, a contract was first signed with Walmart to sell Dell products in 3,500 US branches.

In Germany, the discount chain Lidl has been offering Dell notebooks in its branches since the end of August 2009 as promotional items. Since 2010, selected Dell PC and notebook models have also been sold in German Media Markt stores . Some online shops also offer Dell notebooks, e.g. B. Amazon.com , Conrad and Cyberport .

A few years ago, Dell began to change its positioning in the market and developed from a pure hardware provider to a provider of total solutions and services. In addition to network, server and storage products, as well as entire data centers and data center infrastructure, consulting services are also sold. In this way, Dell aims to meet the needs of companies of all sizes, from small and medium-sized enterprises to corporate groups and the public sector . Dell has invested heavily in the development and expansion of the service area in recent years. The second German branch was established in 2005 in Halle / Saale, primarily to serve medium-sized customers and public clients from here. In particular, Dell has expanded the service sector through a number of acquisitions ; Dell was able to gain a foothold in the consulting business with the takeover of the IT service provider Perot Systems in September 2009. Around 43,000 Dell employees now work in the service sector, which contributes around 15 percent to group sales. Other important acquisitions in the services sector were Scalent Systems, a software manufacturer in the field of data center automation, and Boomi, an integrator for solutions in cloud computing, in 2011 Secureworks, a provider of security solutions and KACE, a provider of applications for the management of systems in larger companies. In addition, a division for industry solutions is being set up. So far, Dell has mainly been active in IT solutions for the healthcare sector, where Dell is currently No. 1 in Europe according to a study by Gartner .
