Storage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Storage (from English storage to German storage or storage ) describes storage solutions in the IT environment, consisting of technical components and permanent storage media for storing digital data.

A storage is an independent server hardware which can contain the following components:

A storage device independently manages the storage capacities made available to it. The storage space can be composed of different hardware technologies and sizes.

definition

The subspecies of storage are as follows:

Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
refers to hard drives connected to a single host that are located in a separate housing.
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
is used to provide independent storage capacity in a computer network without great effort.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
In the field of data processing, denotes a network for connecting hard disk subsystems and tape libraries to server systems.

Classification

Storage can be broken down into three main storage system environments:

Primary storage
is also referred to as online storage or directly available storage. Primary storage includes flash storage and hard disk systems such as solid-state drives (SSD) and RAID and NAS systems. The memory is connected directly to the server or is available independently via a network.
Secondary storage
Also near-line storage, denotes a storage system in which the data is stored on removable media or a slower storage system and an access request is controlled via storage management or backup software.
Archiving
Also offline storage, refers to old or no longer required data that is transferred to another data carrier.

Technologies

Storage is divided into 5 technologies:

Block storage
In a block storage, the access is block-based.
Grid storage
is a storage concept in which the resources are saved regardless of the location. With this storage concept, the utilization, availability and storage capacity can be adjusted flexibly and dynamically. Access is independent of the network infrastructure and the network protocol used.
Storage virtualization
The hard disk memory only appears virtual, but does not necessarily have to be divided along the physical boundaries (per hard disk; per storage unit). A distinction is made here based on the array, software or network level. Classically in array-based storage virtualization, this is done by "dividing" or making hard disks available over a pool of disks (also beyond a RAID). With the software-based solution, software is used on a - mostly - industry standard server. In the network-based variant, it is switches that provide the intelligence. The latter two forms of virtualization add an additional management layer over several or different storage systems.
Unified storage
refers to a storage system that enables files and applications to run from a single piece of hardware. Unified storage enables both block-oriented and file-oriented storage.
Flash memory
ensures non-volatile storage of data with low energy consumption. Flash memories are more robust and less prone to failure than hard drives. The data is not stored on mechanical, but on flash memory components. Modern SSDs achieve an access time of <1 ms and a transfer rate of up to 6 GB / s.
