The portrayal of man and nature, persecution and deportation as well as current political events form the focus of his artistic work. Heinz Cymontkowski's painting makes use of different techniques in which the paint is applied with a brush, spatula and other tools. In numerous works Cymontkowski deals with human freedom.

Another focus of his work are fleeting ink drawings on paper. These works, which Cymontkowski himself called “elementary drawings”, are reduced to essential forms and create an arc of tension with his large-format paintings.

His work in the studio in the village of Teufelsmoor resulted in a confrontation with the Worpswede artists' colony , in particular a preoccupation with the life and work of Heinrich Vogeler. This led to an exhibition in Worpswede in 2012, at which Cymontkowski juxtaposed his work with those of Heinrich Vogeler .

(2008) Drawing on freedom of thought

Freedom of thought

In 2008 Cymontkowski realized his first "freedom of thought": a square meter of earth marked out by red boundary stones in the ground. The Ruhr-Nachrichten quoted Cymontkowski in the May 29, 2008 issue as saying: “The freedom of thought knows no owner, it cannot be bought or occupied by the military. It is an area without regulations and laws. ”The permanent installation next to Selm Castle Botzlar was handed over to the city of Selm on May 28, 2008 as part of a performance by saxophonist Claudius Reimann .

In 2014, the municipal gallery Altes Rathaus for contemporary art in Worpswede also installed a space for thought in the presence of the artist Heinz Cymontkowski.
