NetApp, Inc. , previously known as Network Appliance, Inc. , is a data storage and management company. It is based in Sunnyvale , California . The company ranks 647th (2009) in the Fortune 1000, a list of the top-selling US companies. In January 2009, NetApp was named the top employer in the USA by the business paper Fortune.

NetApp was founded in 1992 under the name Network Appliance by David Hitz, James Lau and Michael Malcolm. In 1995, the company went public on the American NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol NTAP.

The company always traded under the name Network Appliance , but was often referred to in the market as NetApp . On March 10, 2008, the company officially renamed itself to NetApp. In Germany, NetApp Deutschland GmbH, based in Kirchheim near Munich, represents the company. Further offices in Germany are located in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Neu-Isenburg, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and Walldorf.

Major acquisitions

  • 1997 - Internet Middleware: Continued as the NetCache product line (sold again in 2006).
  • 2004 - Spinnaker Networks: The technology of Spinnaker was in the Data ONTAP GX system integrates NetApp.
  • 2005 - Alacritus : The technology of Alacritus was in the product line NearStore VTL integrates NetApp.
  • 2005 - Decru: Decru continues as an independent business unit.
  • 2006 - Topio: Topio's data management software was continued as ReplicatorX , later SnapMirror for Open Systems, until the end of further development was announced in December 2008.
  • 2008 - Onaro: The Onaro data management software is currently being integrated into the NetApp product portfolio and operates under the product name OnCommand Insight (formerly SANscreen ).
  • 2011 - Akorri: The data management software BalancePoint is integrated into the OnCommand Management Suite as OnCommand Insight Balance.
  • 2011 - Engenio: LSI's External Storage Systems Business is integrated into the NetApp product portfolio and offered as an E-Series for Big Data solutions and sold as an OEM product.
  • 2015 - SolidFire : Acquisition of flash storage provider for $ 870 million.

Products

NetApp offers unified storage solutions. The storage solutions include specialized hardware, software and services. They are used by companies and service providers worldwide, including T-Systems , SAP , Lockheed , Merrill Lynch , Oracle , Texas Instruments , Computacenter and Yahoo! .

The NetApp storage solutions are based on the in-house Data ONTAP operating system and can be integrated into a wide range of storage networks ( NAS , SAN , iSCSI ). A special feature of the NetApp storage systems is the uniform operating system in all models, which enables the same functions across the range of models. The different models within a product series differ only in capacity and data throughput.

The company supplies the following product series:

  • FAS series (universal storage system based on Data ONTAP )
  • NearStore series (backup and archiving add-ons for FAS systems including virtual tape library )
  • V series (manufacturer-independent storage virtualization system)
  • DataFort series (data security appliance with encryption function)

The company also offers special software for data management.

NetApp's competitors are EMC , Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), Hewlett Packard Enterprise , IBM , Oracle and Nutanix .

criticism

Despite sanctions, NetApp products made their way to Syria through the Italian company Area SpA, where they help the government track the movement of those involved in the 2011 uprising in Syria .
