IDEXX Laboratories is a US multinational company specializing in the development, manufacture and sale of products and services for pets , livestock and poultry , water testing and dairy products . The company, founded in 1983 is headquartered in the small town of Westbrook in Maine and a European headquarters in Hoofddorp ( Netherlands ). It sells products to customers in over 175 countries worldwide and employs more than 7,000 people in full and part-time positions (as of December 31, 2017). The company has two locations in Germany, one in Kornwestheim and one in Leipzig .

IDEXX Laboratories is part of the NASDAQ-100 stock exchange index . Revenue in fiscal 2018 was $ 2.2 billion, more than doubling since 2010.

history

The company was founded in 1983 by David E. Shaw who until then had worked for a consulting firm near Boston and saw great potential in veterinary medicine and biotechnology. The first few years of IDEXX were accompanied by enormous growth in the biotechnology sector, with the advantage that the regulatory burden for approving new products was less than for most other companies in the industry because they are for animals and the agricultural industry designed and not for people.

In the early years, IDEXX focused on two important product lines. In 1985, IDEXX introduced systems that enable government agencies and businesses to test for contaminants in food and food processing plants. The following year, it began selling diagnostic and detection products to veterinarians. In 1991 the company went public.

In the mid-1990s, after acquiring several testing laboratories, IDEXX began offering laboratory analysis in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan .

Segments

The company is divided into the following three segments: Companion Animal Group, Water and Livestock, Poultry and Dairy. The Companion Animal Group (CAG) offers in-clinic laboratory analyzers for pets. Analyzers measure the blood count and the levels of certain enzymes in the blood or urine to monitor health. The Water segment offers products for measuring microbiological parameters in water. The Livestock and Poultry Diagnostics (LPD) segment offers products for the detection of diseases in farm animals and poultry. Products in this segment include tests for various animal diseases.
