history

The parent company was founded as part of the restructuring of Google , which was first announced on August 10, 2015. The existing shares of Google were automatically converted into Alphabet shares at a ratio of 1: 1, the share abbreviations are still called GOOGLE or GOOGLE .

Since October 2nd, 2015, Google LLC has been a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. The core business of Internet services will retain the name Google . The previous Google boss Larry Page changes with Sergey Brin to the head of the newly created holding. Google LLC, on the other hand, runs Sundar Pichai .

According to Page, the new structure should help to plan for the long term and to achieve more ambitious goals. He is aiming for positive effects for future investments and more transparency and control. He and Brin chose the name alphabet because it stood for language itself - one of the most important inventions of mankind. In a blog post he wrote, “In the tech industry, where revolutionary ideas are driving the next big growth areas, you have to be a little uncomfortable to stay relevant. […] Our company works well today, but we believe we can do it easier and more responsibly. So we're starting a new company called Alphabet. I am really excited to lead Alphabet as CEO with the help of my capable partner Sergey as President. "

The internal company motto Don't be evil was abandoned in favor of Do the right thing . Since the internet domain alphabet.com is used by the BMW subsidiary Alphabet Fuhrparkmanagement GmbH , the URL abc.xyz and abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com were first saved. The second of these is currently not in use.

Alphabet Inc. was ranked the world's most valuable company based on the number of shares outstanding at $ 570 billion as of February 1, 2016. However, as of February 4, 2016, Apple has been rated higher.

On December 3, 2019, Page and Brin announced their resignation from their posts at Alphabet in a blog post. Since then, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai has also led Alphabet as managing director.
