Calico is a biotechnology company that develops methods against human aging . It was founded in 2013 by the US company Google Inc. The name is derived as an abbreviation of California Life Company . On August 10, 2015, Calico became a subsidiary of the newly founded holding company Alphabet Inc.

The company is run by Arthur D. Levinson along with Robert Cohen, Hal V. Barron , David Botstein and Cynthia Kenyon . Three of the last four were already involved in the field of genetic engineering . In 2013, Google co-founder Larry Page described in an open letter that the company had a focus on " health , well-being and longevity".

In September 2014, Calico announced that she would be working with the US company AbbVie to focus research more on the aging process and age-related diseases . Each of the two companies plans to initially invest $ 250 million in joint research with the option of increasing research funding by an additional $ 500 million.
