Larry Page (2009)

Lawrence "Larry" Edward Page (born March 26, 1973 in East Lansing , Michigan ) is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur and was CEO of Alphabet Inc. from July 23, 2015 to December 3, 2019 .

Page graduated from the University of Michigan the Bachelor in Engineering Sciences and the Stanford University the Master in computer science . Together with Sergey Brin he developed the search engine Google . The prototype was launched on September 7, 1998. Since then, he has been CMO and CEO of the Californian company Google Inc until he co-founded the new Google parent company Alphabet Inc. in 2015 . He finally resigned from this office on December 3, 2019.

Google

The idea for Google was originally part of an academic research paper by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University , for which a patent was applied for. One of the main reasons for Google's rapid success was the PageRank algorithm . Since Page quickly understood the enormous potential this had, he decided to put his dissertation on hold (until today). At first, Page tried in vain to inspire the then largest Internet companies for this new technology. In August 1998, however, Andy (von) Bechtolsheim provided the search engine with a check for $ 100,000 after a ten-minute presentation. Since Bechtolsheim assumed that Google was the company, he used Google Inc. as the recipient . Since such a company did not exist until then, Page and Brin registered the company under this name so that the check could be cashed at all, whereupon Page became the first boss of the newly founded company (until 2001).

Page did not get the necessary capital for Google Inc. - in contrast to many other start-up entrepreneurs of the time - from a large venture capital financier, but borrowed it from various donors in smaller amounts. Not dependent on a venture finance company , he retained control of his company from the start. In this way, the two founders of Google Inc. were able to hold the majority in the group even when they went public and thus secure the necessary influence on the development of their own company. When it went public on August 19, 2004, Page was a multi-billionaire with 38 million shares .

In 2001, Page and Brin brought the former Novell manager Eric Schmidt on board. Page relinquished company management to lead product development. Schmidt became Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chief Executive Officer , "in order to be able to continue building the company infrastructure and the rapid growth of Google as well as to ensure consistently high quality with the shortest possible product development cycles". Between 2001 and 2011, Schmidt built up Google with Page and Brin to become one of the leading IT companies, with the number of employees growing from 200 to 24,400.

On April 4, 2011, Page replaced Eric Schmidt as CEO, who moved to the Google Board of Directors .
