East Lansing is a city in the US state of Michigan . The city is located east of the capital Lansing . Most of the city is in Ingham County , with a small portion in Clinton County . According to the 2000 census, there were 46,525 residents in East Lansing. The city is the seat of Michigan State University .

history

Settlement of East Lansing began around 1847, the year the nearby town of Lansing was made the capital. The urban area was a major intersection of two Indian trails : Okemah Road and Park Lake Trail .

Michigan State University was founded in 1855 and built in 1857 on what is now the city. For the first 40 years the students and faculty lived on the university campus, with few commuting from Lansing. Around 1890 a tram line was built to make it easier for a growing number of students to travel from Lansing.

In 1887, William James Beal and Rolla C. Carpenter founded Collegeville , near what is now Harrison Road and Beal Street, on north Michigan Avenue. Some departments settled there and the first residents were unskilled workers.

The official mailing address at the time was Agricultural College, Michigan . A school district was established in the growing community in 1900, and in 1907 the city was founded under the name College Park and a short time later renamed East Lansing .

From 1907, the town's statutes prohibited the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages. These statutes were not repealed until 1968.

Since 1998, East Lansing has made aggressive use of the 425 Agreement to extend the Intergovernmental Conditional Transfer Of Property By Contract Act to include the city ​​limits . This agreement was concluded with Bath Township, DeWitt Township and Meridian Township and has expanded the city area by a few square kilometers. Various sports facilities such as the Four Winds golf course and the football complex have also been integrated into the city.

Downtown is centered around Grand River Avenue , a wide avenue from the 19th century. Grand River Avenue divides the city from Michigan State University. There are many shops on the street near the university. In the north of the city are the residential districts of the city.

According to the 2000 census, 46,525 people lived in 14,390 households and 5,094 families. The population density was 1597 per km 2 .

There were children under the age of 18 in 16.1% of households and there were married couples in 27.6%. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.82 inhabitants.

The median household income was $ 28,217 and the median family income was $ 61,985. About 11% of all families and a total of 34.8% were below the poverty line .

Culture

  • The East Lansing Film Festival is the largest film festival in Michigan, in the five days over 100 films. The festival has been held annually in March since 1997. The range of films ranges from independent productions to foreign films, documentaries, short and student films. On the last day of the festival, the so-called Lake Michigan Film Competition takes place, in which only productions from Wisconsin , Illinois , Indiana and Michigan are shown. There are also exhibitions like the East Lansing Art Festival and music festivals like the Great Lakes Folk Festival .
