Ingham County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Mason .

The county is centrally located in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,453 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Shiawassee County , Livingston County , Jackson County , Eaton County, and Clinton County .
history
Ingham County was formed in 1838 from parts of Shiawassee County, Washtenaw County, and Free Territory. It was named after Samuel D. Ingham , a US Treasury Secretary. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Michigan State Capitol . 48 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 25, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Ingham County had 279,320 people in 108,593 households and 63,744 families. The population density was 193 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.46 percent white, 10.86 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 3.68 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.99 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.80 percent of the population.
Of the 108,593 households, 29.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.1 percent were single mothers, and 41.3 percent were non-families. 30.2 percent were single households and 7.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.04.
23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 18.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 9.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 90.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,774 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,063. Males had a median income of $ 40,335 versus $ 30,178 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,079. 8.3 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
