Muskegon County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Muskegon .

The county is located in the west of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of 3780 square kilometers, of which 2461 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Oceana County , Newaygo County , Kent County, and Ottawa County .

Muskegon County was formed in 1859 from parts of Oceana County. It was named after the Muskegon River .
Two engineering structures in Muskegon County have National Historic Landmark status , the Milwaukee Clipper steamship and the USS Silversides submarine . 14 places in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Muskegon County had 170,200 people in 63,330 households and 44,267 families. The population density was 129 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.25 percent white, 14.20 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.01 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.53 percent of the population.
Of the 63,330 households, 34.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 percent were married couples living together, 13.9 percent were single mothers, and 30.1 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.10.
27.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 95.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 38,008 US dollars , and the median income for a family 45,710 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,952 versus $ 25,430 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,967. 8.8 percent of families and 11.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
