Sanilac County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Sandusky .

The county is located in the east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the east , and has an area of 4119 square kilometers, of which 1622 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: St. Clair Counties , Lapeer Counties , Tuscola Counties , and Huron Counties .
history
Sanilac County was formed in 1822 from parts of St. Clair County. It was named after Sanilac , the chief of the Wyandot , also called the Hurons , who were a formerly powerful Indian people in North America .
Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Sanilac County had 44,547 people in 16,871 households and 12,163 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.90 percent white, 0.28 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,871 households, 32.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.08.
26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 36,870 USD , and the median income for a family 42,306 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,101 versus $ 21,376 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,089. 7.6 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
