Allegan County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Allegan .

The county is located in the southwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bordered to the west by Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of 4748 square kilometers, of which 2143 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Ottawa County , Kent County , Barry County , Kalamazoo County, and Van Buren County .
history
Allegan County was formed in 1831 from parts of Barry County and Free Territory. From 1835 it had an administration. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.

As of the 2000 census , Allegan County had 105,665 people in 38,165 households and 28,394 families. The population density was 49 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.47 percent white, 1.31 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.55 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.77 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.32 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.72 percent of the population.
Of the 38,165 households, 37.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers, and 25.6 percent were non-families. 20.7 percent were single households and 7.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.15.
28.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 11.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 97.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 45,813 USD , and the median income for a family 51,908 USD. Males had a median income of $ 38,681 versus $ 26,887 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,918. 5.0 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
