Cheboygan County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Cheboygan .

The county is located in the north of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , to the north , and has an area of ​​2293 square kilometers, of which 439 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Presque Isle County , Montmorency County , Otsego County , Charlevoix County , Emmet County, and on Lake Huron by Mackinac County .

history

Cheboygan County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named after the Cheboygan River .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the colonial Fort Michilimackinac . Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 22, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Cheboygan County had 26,448 people in 10,835 households and 7,573 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.80 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 2.55 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.05 percent were descended from two or more races.
