Barry County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Hastings .

The county is located in the mid-northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is about 60 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of ​​1,494 square kilometers, of which 54 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Ionia County , Eaton County , Calhoun County , Kalamazoo County , Allegan County, and Kent Counties .

history

Barry County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1829. It was named after William T. Barry , a US Postal Secretary. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet Counties , as it was named after a member of the cabinet of US President Andrew Jackson like some others .

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Barry County had 56,755 people in 21,035 households and 15,986 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.39 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races.
