Isabella County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Mount Pleasant .

The county is almost centrally located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,496 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Midland County , Gratiot County , Montcalm County , Mecosta County, and Clare Counties .

history

Isabella County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after Isabella I , Queen of Castile , the patroness of Christopher Columbus .

Four buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 25, 2017).

According to an official estimate in 2006, 65,818 people lived here in 22,425 households and 13,006 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.51 percent white, 1.93 percent African American, 2.75 percent Native American, 1.40 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 22,425 households, 28.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, and 42.0 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.

20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 29.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 17.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 9.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 88.6 men.
