Schoolcraft County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Manistique .

geography

The county is located in the middle east of the Upper Peninsula , bordering Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , to the south , and has an area of ​​4879 square kilometers, of which 1827 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Delta County , Alger County , Luce County , Mackinac County, and on Lake Michigan: Charlevoix County and Leelanau Counties .

history

Schoolcraft County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the researcher and ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Schoolcraft County had 8,903 people in 3,606 households and 2,498 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer.
