Schoolcraft County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Manistique .

The county is located in the middle east of the Upper Peninsula , bordering Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , to the south , and has an area of 4879 square kilometers, of which 1827 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Delta County , Alger County , Luce County , Mackinac County, and on Lake Michigan: Charlevoix County and Leelanau Counties .

history

Schoolcraft County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the researcher and ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Schoolcraft County had 8,903 people in 3,606 households and 2,498 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.67 percent white, 1.63 percent African American, 6.12 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.93 percent of the population.

Of the 3,606 households, 28.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 30.7 percent were non-families. 27.4 percent were single households and 13.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.84 people.

22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 18.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 99.2 men.

The median income for a household in the 31,140 USD , and the median income for a family 36,810 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,725 versus $ 21,364 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,137. 9.1 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
