Luce County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Newberry .

The county is located in the northeast of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Superior , one of the five great lakes , to the north , and has an area of 4952 square kilometers, of which 2613 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Chippewa County , Mackinac County , Schoolcraft County, and Alger County .
history
Luce County was formed in 1887 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after Cyrus G. Luce , a Michigan governor.
One building in the county, the Luce County Sheriff's House and Jail , is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of November 30, 2017.

According to the 2000 census , Luce County had 7,024 people in 2,481 households and 1,739 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.84 percent white, 7.52 percent African American, 5.54 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.75 percent of the population.
Of the 2,481 households, 29.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 29.9 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent were single households and 12.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 124.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 132.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,031 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,359. Males had a median income of $ 31,427 versus $ 21,101 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,828. 12.0 percent of families and 14.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
