Baraga County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is L'Anse .

The county is in the northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and bordered to the north by Lake Superior (Lake Superior), one of the five Great Lakes . It has an area of ​​2768 square kilometers, of which 427 square kilometers are water. Baraga County is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marquette County , Iron County, and Houghton Counties .

history

Baraga County was formed in 1875 from parts of Houghton County. It was named after Frederic Baraga , a European missionary and bishop who was born in Trebnje , now Slovenia , and who taught Christianity to the native Americans in this area.

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017). Portions of Keweenaw National Historical Park are in the county.

According to the 2000 census , Baraga County had 8,746 people. 783 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,353 households and 2,223 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.61 percent white, 4.99 percent African American, 12.04 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.82 percent were descended from two or more races.
