Gratiot County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Ithaca .

The county is located slightly southeast of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,480 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Midland County , Saginaw County , Clinton County , Montcalm County, and Isabella County .
history
Gratiot County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1831. It was named after Charles Gratiot , an officer who built Fort Gratiot on the site of what is now the city of Port Huron .
Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Gratiot County had 42,285 people in 14,501 households and 10,397 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.01 percent white, 3.72 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.76 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.60 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.43 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,501 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, and 28.3 percent were non-families. 23.7 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.02.
23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 11.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 108.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 109.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 37,262 USD , and the median income for a family 43,954 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,442 versus $ 22,333 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,118. 7.3 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
