Kent County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Grand Rapids .
geography
The county is located southwest of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 2259 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montcalm County , Ionia County , Barry County , Allegan County , Ottawa County , Muskegon County, and Newaygo County .
history
Kent County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after James Kent , a lawyer from New York .
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Norton Mound Group , a site of the Hopewell culture . 49 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 25, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Kent County had 574,335 people in 212,890 households and 144,126 families. The population density was 259 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 83.13 percent white, 8.93 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 1.86 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.00 percent of the population.
Of the 212,890 households, 35.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers, and 32.3 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent were single households and 8.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.20.
28.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 19.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 45,980 USD , and the median income for a family 54,770 USD. Males had a median income of $ 39,878 versus $ 27,364 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,629. 8.9 percent of the population and 6.3 percent of families are below the poverty line.
