Ontonagon County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Ontonagon .
geography
The county is located almost in the far west of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Superior , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the north , and has an area of 9,690 square kilometers, of which 6,293 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Houghton County , Iron County , Gogebic County and on Lake Superior by Keweenaw County .
history
Ontonagon County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the Nantounagon, given by early French conquerors, for a small river in this area.
Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ontonagon County had 7,818 people in 3,456 households and 2,225 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.25 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.96 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.74 percent of the population.
Of the 3,456 households, 23.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 percent were married couples living together, 6.3 percent were single mothers, and 35.6 percent were non-families. 31.5 percent were single households and 16.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.75 people.
20.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 30.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 29,552 US dollars , and the median income for a family 36,690 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,884 versus $ 21,121 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,695. 5.8 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
