Shiawassee County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Corunna .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,400 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saginaw County , Genesee County , Livingston County , Ingham County , Clinton County, and Gratiot Counties .
history
Shiawassee County was formed in 1822 from parts of Oakland Counties and St. Clair Counties. It was named after the Shiawassee River .

According to the 2000 census , Shiawassee County had 71,687 people in 26,896 households and 19,849 families. The population density was 51 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.39 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.17 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.81 percent of the population.
Of the 26,896 households, 35.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.3 percent were single mothers, and 26.2 percent were non-families. 21.7 percent were single households and 9.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 42,553 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,329. Males had a median income of $ 39,190 versus $ 25,063 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,229. 5.7 percent of families and 7.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
