Shiawassee County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Corunna .

The county is located southeast of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,400 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Saginaw County , Genesee County , Livingston County , Ingham County , Clinton County, and Gratiot Counties .

history

Shiawassee County was formed in 1822 from parts of Oakland Counties and St. Clair Counties. It was named after the Shiawassee River .

According to the 2000 census , Shiawassee County had 71,687 people in 26,896 households and 19,849 families. The population density was 51 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.39 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.17 percent were descended from two or more races.
