Leelanau County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Leland .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula in Michigan, borders in the northeast on Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of 6559 square kilometers, of which 5656 square kilometers are water surface. In addition to the area on the mainland, it also includes the Fox and Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Antrim County , Grand Traverse County , Benzie County, and on Lake Michigan by Delta County , Schoolcraft County, and Charlevoix Counties .
history
Leelanau County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the North Manitou Island Lifesaving Station . 22 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Leelanau County had 21,119 people in 8,436 households and 6,217 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.52 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 3.66 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,436 households, 29.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent were single households and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
24.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 28.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males. Statistically, for every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 97.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 47,062 US dollars , and the median income for a family 53,228 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,719 versus $ 25,778 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,686. 3.3 percent of families and 5.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
