Iosco County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Tawas City .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Huron , one of the 5 Great Lakes , to the east , and has an area of 4897 square kilometers, of which 3475 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Arenac County , Ogemaw County, and Alcona County .
history
Iosco County was formed as the Original Free Territory County in 1840. Until 1843, its name was Kanotin County . It was named by Henry Schoolcraft after a word from the Indian language.
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 25, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Iosco County had 27,339 people in 11,727 households and 7,857 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.92 percent white, 0.41 percent African American, 0.66 percent Native American, 0.46 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.27 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.98 percent of the population.
Of the 11,727 households, 24.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 33.0 percent were non-families. 28.6 percent were single households and 14.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
22.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,321 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,452. Males had a median income of $ 30,338 versus $ 21,149 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,115. 9.5 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
