Montcalm County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Stanton .

The county is located about southwest of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is about 70 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of ​​1967 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Isabella County , Gratiot County , Ionia County , Kent County , Newaygo County, and Mecosta Counties .

history

Montcalm County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory. It was named after Louis-Joseph de Montcalm , a commander of the French army in Canada during the French and Indian War and the Seven Years' War (1756–1763).

Three of the county's sites are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Montcalm County had 61,266 people in 22,079 households and 16,183 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.83 percent white, 2.17 percent African American, 0.60 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.64 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.46 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.28 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. Statistically, there were 106 men for every 100 women aged 18 and over.

The median income for a household in the 37,218 US dollars , and the median income for a family 42,823 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,635 versus $ 23,645 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,183. 7.4 percent of families and 10.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
