Osceola County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Reed City .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,484 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Missaukee County , Clare County , Mecosta County , Lake County, and Wexford Counties .
history
Osceola County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. Until 1843 it was called Unwattin County. It was named after Osceola , a chief of the Seminoles .

As of the 2000 census , Osceola County had 23,197 people in 8,861 households and 6,415 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.51 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.21 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.99 percent of the population.
Of the 8,861 households, 32.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, and 27.6 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent were single households and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.01.
27.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,102 US dollars , and the median income for a family 39,205 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,837 versus $ 22,278 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,632. 9.5 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
