Midland County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Midland .

The county is east of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 35 km to the northeast from Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of ​​1,367 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gladwin County , Bay County , Saginaw County , Gratiot County , Isabella County, and Clare County .

history

Midland County was formed in 1831 from parts of Saginaw County and Free Territory. It was named for its location near the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula .

Two locations in Midland County have National Historic Landmark status , the Alden Dow House and Studio and the Herbert H. Dow House . A total of 27 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Midland County had 82,874 people in 31,769 households and 22,683 families. The population density was 61 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.50 percent white, 1.05 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 1.49 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 31,769 households, 34.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 28.6 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.04.

26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 93.3 men.

The median income for a household in the 45,674 USD , and the median income for a family 55,483 USD. Males had a median income of $ 45,656 versus $ 27,470 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,383. 5.7 percent of families and 8.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
