Mecosta County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Big Rapids .

The county is located west of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Mecosta County in the west about 80 km from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 great lakes , and has an area of ​​1479 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Osceola County , Isabella County , Montcalm County, and Newaygo County .

history

Mecosta County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Oceana County. It was named after Mecosta , an Indian chief.

According to the 2000 census , Mecosta County had 40,553 people in 14,915 households and 9,888 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.68 percent white, 3.60 percent African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.87 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.79 percent were descended from two or more races.
