Mecosta County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Big Rapids .

The county is located west of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Mecosta County in the west about 80 km from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 great lakes , and has an area of 1479 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Osceola County , Isabella County , Montcalm County, and Newaygo County .
history
Mecosta County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Oceana County. It was named after Mecosta , an Indian chief.
Two buildings in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Mecosta County had 40,553 people in 14,915 households and 9,888 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.68 percent white, 3.60 percent African American, 0.64 percent Native American, 0.87 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.79 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.28 percent of the population.
Of the 14,915 households, 29.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers, and 33.7 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.95.
22.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 19.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 102.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 33,849 USD , and the median income for a family 40,465 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,127 versus $ 22,467 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,372. 9.6 percent of families and 16.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
