Montmorency County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Atlanta .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the east from Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 1,457 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Presque Isle County , Alpena County , Oscoda County , Otsego County, and Cheboygan County .
history
Montmorency County was formed from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory in 1840. Until 1843 it was called Cheonoquet County . It was named after the French noble family Montmorency .

According to the 2000 census , Montmorency County had 10,315 people in 4,455 households and 3,047 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.36 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.65 percent of the population.
Of the 4,455 households, 22.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers, and 31.6 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent were single households and 15.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.75 people.
20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 20.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 29.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 23.9 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 30,005 US dollars , and the median income for a family 34,784 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,910 versus $ 19,299 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,493. 9.8 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
