Montmorency County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Atlanta .

The county is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 45 km to the east from Lake Huron , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of ​​1,457 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Presque Isle County , Alpena County , Oscoda County , Otsego County, and Cheboygan County .

history

Montmorency County was formed from parts of Mackinac County and Free Territory in 1840. Until 1843 it was called Cheonoquet County . It was named after the French noble family Montmorency .

According to the 2000 census , Montmorency County had 10,315 people in 4,455 households and 3,047 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.36 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races.
