Crawford County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Grayling .

The county is located in the north-central part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of ​​1,459 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Otsego County , Oscoda County , Roscommon County, and Kalkaska County .

history

Crawford County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory as Shawano County . In 1843 it was renamed to its current name. It was named after Fort Crawford in Wisconsin , which was named after the politician William H. Crawford .

Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Crawford County's 14,273 people lived in 5,625 households and 4,038 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.38 percent white, 1.50 percent African American, 0.60 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.05 percent were descended from two or more races.
