Hillsdale County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Hillsdale .

The county is located in the extreme south of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, borders Ohio to the south, with Indiana at the southwestern corner and has an area of 1572 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Lenawee County , Branch County, and Calhoun Counties .

Hillsdale County was formed as the original free territory county in 1829. It was named after the hilly country in which the county is located.

Hillsdale County had a population of 46,527 as of the 2000 census . 1,481 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,335 households and 12,550 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.56 percent white, 0.43 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.98 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.20 percent of the population.
Of the 17,335 households, 32.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 27.6 percent were non-families. 22.9 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,396 USD , and the median income for a family 45,895 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,349 versus $ 23,718 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,255. 5.2 percent of families and 8.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
