Kalamazoo County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Kalamazoo .

The county is located in the southwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, about 40 km to the south from Indiana , about 50 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the five great lakes , and has an area of 1,503 square kilometers, of which 47 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Barry County , Calhoun County , St. Joseph County , Van Buren County, and Allegan County .
history
Kalamazoo County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1829. It was named, like the district capital, after the Kalamazoo River . Both take their name from the language of the Indian tribes there.

As of the 2000 census , Kalamazoo County had 238,603 people in 93,479 households and 57,956 families. The population density was 164 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.57 percent white, 9.73 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 1.83 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.27 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.15 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.64 percent of the population.
Of the 93,479 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, and 38.0 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent were single households and 8.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.00.
24.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 15.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were statistically 90.5 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 42,022 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,953. Males had a median income of $ 39,611 versus $ 27,965 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,739. 6.5 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
