Grand Traverse County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Traverse City .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is about 35 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 great lakes , and has an area of ​​1,557 square kilometers, of which 352 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Antrim County , Kalkaska County , Wexford County , Benzie County, and Leelanau Counties .

Grand Traverse County was formed from the defunct Omeena County in 1851. It was named after Grand Traverse Bay .

As of the 2000 census , Grand Traverse County's population was 77,654. 1,823 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 30,396 households and 20,730 families. The population density was 64 inhabitants per square kilometer.
