Grand Traverse County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Traverse City .

The county is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is about 35 km to the west from Lake Michigan , one of the 5 great lakes , and has an area of 1,557 square kilometers, of which 352 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Antrim County , Kalkaska County , Wexford County , Benzie County, and Leelanau Counties .

Grand Traverse County was formed from the defunct Omeena County in 1851. It was named after Grand Traverse Bay .

As of the 2000 census , Grand Traverse County's population was 77,654. 1,823 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 30,396 households and 20,730 families. The population density was 64 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.51 percent white, 0.40 percent African American, 0.93 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.49 percent of the population.
Of the 30,396 households, 32.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 31.8 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
25.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 43,169 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,211. Males had a median income of $ 34,796 versus $ 24,139 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,111. 3.8 percent of families and 5.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
