Alger County is a county in the US state of Michigan . The county seat is Munising .

The county is located in the north of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Superior , one of the Great Lakes , and has an area of 13,077 square kilometers, of which 10,700 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Luce County , Schoolcraft County , Delta County, and Marquette Counties .
history
Alger County was formed in 1885 from parts of Schoolcraft County. It was named after Russell A. Alger , a Michigan governor and US Senator .

As of the 2000 census , Alger County had 9,862 people in 3,785 households and 2,585 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.81 percent white, 6.11 percent African American, 3.30 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.03 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.00 percent of the population.
Of the 3,785 households, 27.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, and 31.7 percent were non-families. 26.8 percent were single households and 12.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
20.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 17.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 116.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were statistically 120.6 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,892 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,017. Males had a median income of $ 37,681 versus $ 24,492 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,210. 7.2 percent of families and 10.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
