Munising is a city on the southern shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula in the US state of Michigan . In 2000 the place had 2539 inhabitants. The city is the county seat of Alger County and is located in the northwest corner of Munising Township, but is administratively independent.

Munising is on the southern edge of Munising Bay at 46 ° 25 '  N , 86 ° 39'  W ; also known as the South Bay of Grand Island Harbor, the bay is across from Grand Island at the mouth of the Anna River. The small harbor is the main starting point for boat tours to the Pictured Rocks and Grand Island.

The name Munising is derived from the Ojibwe language. Munissi means "island", Munising refers to the proximity of the island - Grand Island is less than a kilometer to the north.

Munising's population was 93.74% White , 0.16% Black or African American , 3.51% Native American , 0.67% Asian , 0.12% Pacific Islander , and 0.08% said other races belong to and 1.79% named two or more races. 0.98% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Munising distributed to 1115 households out of which 24.4% were living in children under 18 years. 44.8% of households were married, 10.2% had a female head of household without a husband, and 41.3% were not families. 36.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 19.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
