Steven John Raica (born November 8, 1952 in Munising , Michigan ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Birmingham .

Life

Steven John Raica first studied mathematics at Michigan State University . From 1973 he studied at the Provincial College in Plymouth . He then graduated from the University of Detroit to the Master of Arts . On October 14, 1978, he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Lansing through Bishop Kenneth Joseph Povish .

In addition to pastoral work, he was deaf chaplain from 1978 to 1985 . After further studies, he obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University and received his doctorate in 1996 . From 1991 to 1993 and from 1996 to 1999 he worked as a diocesan judge. From 1997 to 1998 he was vicar general in the diocese of Lansing. In 1998 he was made an honorary papal prelate .

From 1999 to 2005 he was in Rome, where he was, among other things, superior of the Casa Santa Maria of the Pontifical North America College . After his return he was cancellarius curiae in the diocese of Lansing.

On June 27, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Gaylord . The Archbishop of Detroit ordained him episcopal on August 28 of the same year. Co-consecrators were the former Bishop of Lansing, Carl Frederick Mengeling , and his predecessor Bernard Hebda , coadjutor archbishop of Newark .

On March 25, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Birmingham. The inauguration took place on June 23 of the same year.
