catholic-hierarchy.org is an online database on the bishops and dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church ( Latin Church and Eastern Catholic Churches ). The website is a private project by David M. Cheney from Kansas City . It is not supported by church bodies.
Origin and content
In the 1990s, David M. Cheney created a simple website that documented the Roman Catholic bishops in his home state of Texas . At that time, many did not yet have a web presence. In 2002, after moving to the Midwest, he created the website catholic-hierarchy.org and gradually expanded it to the United States and all countries.
The database contains geographic, organizational, and address information for all current and historical Roman Catholic dioceses in the world, including the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches that are in full communion with the Holy See .
It also provides biographical information on the incumbent and many former diocesan and auxiliary bishops such as dates of birth, ordinations and, if applicable, death.
The database is used as a reference by Vatican Radio, as well as numerous dioceses around the world, academic institutions, libraries, newspapers (both secular and Catholic) and publications. The Vatican observer Sandro Magister recommends the site. It is used as a reference by ecclesiastical publicists such as John L. Allen, Jr. and canon lawyers such as Edward N. Peters and Rocco Palmo. The Zenit news agency refers to the "silent and unique service for the Church".
The sources used are the printed sources of the Holy See Annuario Pontificio , Acta Apostolicae Sedis and Acta Sanctae Sedis as well as historical studies. The current changes of dioceses and bishops are taken from the Vatican Information Service .
