Robert Joseph Baker (born June 4, 1944 in Willard , Ohio ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of Birmingham .

Life

The Bishop of Saint Augustine , Paul Francis Tanner , ordained him a priest on March 21, 1970 .

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Charleston on July 12, 1999 . The Archbishop of Atlanta , John Francis Donoghue , ordained him episcopally on September 29 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Gabriel Montalvo Higuera , Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America , and John Joseph Snyder , Bishop of Saint Augustine.

He was named Bishop of Birmingham , Alabama on August 14, 2007, and inducted into office on October 2 of the same year.

On March 25, 2020, Pope Francis accepted Robert Joseph Baker's motion to resign on grounds of age.
