John Francis Donoghue (born August 9, 1928 in Washington, DC , † November 11, 2011 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Atlanta .

Life

John Francis Donoghue, one of four sons of Irish immigrants, studied theology at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore . He also studied canon law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC . He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1955 in St. Matthew Cathedral in Washington . He served in the pastoral care of Riverdale (1955–1961) and Great Mills, Maryland (1961–1964). After completing his postgraduate studies in canon law, he worked in the ordinariate in Washington, where he was chancellor and vicar general . In 1970 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed monsignor , in 1971 papal honorary prelate .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Charlotte on November 6, 1984 . The former bishop of Charlotte Michael Joseph Begley donated him episcopal ordination on December 18, 1984 ; Co- consecrators were James Aloysius Hickey , Archbishop of Washington , and Thomas William Lyons , Auxiliary Bishop of Washington. His episcopal motto was "To live in Christ Jesus". He built the Catholic Conference Center in Catawba County and in 1991 helped found the Catholic News Herald , the diocese newspaper.

He was named Archbishop of Atlanta on June 22, 1993 and inducted into office on August 19 of the same year. On December 9, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Donoghue described himself as an "Orthodox Catholic" and campaigned against abortion and the ordination of women. Sexual abuse by priests was on his public agenda. He initiated migrant programs for African American , Korean, and Vietnamese Catholics. In 1997 he started the fundraising campaign “Building the Church of Tomorrow” and was able to support Catholic schools in the USA with 70 million US dollars and build three elementary schools and two high schools.
