Wilton Daniel Gregory (born December 7, 1947 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington .

Life

Wilton Daniel Gregory received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 9, 1973 through the Archbishop of Chicago, John Cardinal Cody .

On October 18, 1983 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Oliva and auxiliary bishop in Chicago. The Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin , donated him episcopal ordination on December 13 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Chicago, Alfred Leo Abramowicz and Nevin William Hayes OCarm .

On December 29, 1993, John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Belleville . He was inaugurated on February 10, 1994. In 2002 he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Church's Cultural Property . On December 9, 2004, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Atlanta . The inauguration took place on January 17, 2005.

Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life on October 6, 2018 . On April 4, 2019, Francis appointed him Archbishop of Washington. The inauguration took place on May 21 of the same year. Gregory, generally regarded as progressive within the church, is the first African-American in this office.
