John Patrick Cardinal Cody (born December 24, 1907 in St. Louis , Missouri , USA , † April 25, 1982 in Chicago , Illinois , USA) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago .

Life

John Cody was born in St. Louis to a family of Irish descent. From the age of twelve he attended the St. Louis Preparatory Seminary . He then studied in Rome at the Pontifical Athenaeum “De Propaganda Fide” and at the Pontifical Athenaeum “Sant'Apollinare” Catholic theology and philosophy . In addition, he entered the Seminary of the Pontifical North American College and received on 8 December 1931 by Francesco Cardinal Marchetti Selvaggiani the sacrament of Holy Orders .

In 1928 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD , 1932 Dr. theol. and in 1938 Dr. iur. can. From 1932 to 1938 he was also a lecturer at the Pontifical North America College and also worked for the Vatican State Secretariat . After returning to the United States, he was Archbishop's Secretary to the Archbishop of St. Louis , John Joseph Glennon , from 1938 to 1940 , and at the same time chaplain at St. Mary's Home for Girls .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on May 24, 1939, His Holiness' s secret chaplain . On May 2, 1940, he became Cancellarius Curiae of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. On July 14, 1946, Pius XII awarded him. the title of House Prelate of His Holiness and appointed him on May 14, 1947 Titular Bishop of Apollonia and Auxiliary Bishop in Chicago. The episcopal ordination received his Joseph Ritter on July 2 of that year in the Cathedral of St. Louis; Co- consecrators were George Joseph Donnelly (en) , Bishop of Kansas City in Kansas and Vincent Stanislaus Waters , Bishop of Raleigh . He became Bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph on September 11, 1956 , having previously served as coadjutor bishop . On August 14, 1961 he was by Pope John XXIII. Appointed Titular Archbishop of Bostra and Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans . On June 1, 1962 he became Apostolic Administrator there ; in the same year there also vicar general . On November 8, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as Archbishop of New Orleans and shortly afterwards, on June 14, 1965, as Archbishop of Chicago. During this time he also took on the Second Vatican Council in part.

In the consistory of June 26, 1967 Paul VI took him. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Cecilia in the college of cardinals . Cody attended the August 1978 conclave , which John Paul I elected, and the October 1978 conclave , from which John Paul II emerged as Pope.

John Cody died of a heart attack at the age of 74 and was buried in the Episcopal Mausoleum in Mount Carmel Cemetery (Hillside) in Chicago.
