The diocese of Raleigh ( Latin Dioecesis Raleighiensis , English Diocese of Raleigh ) located in the USA is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church .
history
The Diocese of Raleigh was detached from the Diocese of Charleston as Vicariate Apostolic North Carolina on March 3, 1868 and belonged to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan . After it had ceded 3,340 square kilometers to the new territorial abbey Belmont-Mary Help of Christians on June 8, 1910 , it was raised to the diocese of Raleigh on December 12, 1924 .
On April 17, 1944, large areas of the territorial abbey returned to the diocese. In July 1960, Raleigh received Gaston County from the Territorial Abbey and moved as a suffragan from the Archdiocese of Baltimore to the Archdiocese of Atlanta on February 10, 1962 .
When the diocese was founded, there were around 6,000 Catholics in the diocese. The cathedral was the previous parish church Sacred Heart (Herz Jesu) with a capacity of 300 seats. Since the number of Catholics in the diocese has now risen to around 500,000, a new cathedral was planned. In January 2015, construction began on the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral , which will have 2000 seats. The consecration of the new cathedral is scheduled for July 26, 2017.
