Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston ( lat. : Archidioecesis Galvestoniensis Houstoniensis ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Galveston , Texas .
history
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston was founded in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. from the cession of territory of the diocese Linares o Nueva León as Apostolic Prefecture of Texas established. On July 10, 1841, the Apostolic Prefecture of Texas was by Gregory XVI. raised to the apostolic vicariate .
The Vicariate Apostolic Texas was on May 4, 1847 by Pope Pius IX. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Galveston . On July 19, 1850, the Diocese of Galveston was subordinated to the Archdiocese of New Orleans as a suffragan . The Diocese of Galveston gave on August 28, 1874 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of San Antonio and the Vicariate Apostolic Brownsville . Another assignment of territory took place on July 15, 1890 to establish the diocese of Dallas . On August 3, 1926, the Diocese of Galveston was subordinated to the Archdiocese of San Antonio as a suffragan. The Diocese of Galveston gave on November 15, 1947 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Austin .
On July 25, 1959, the Diocese of Galveston was renamed the Diocese of Galveston-Houston . The Diocese of Galveston-Houston gave on June 25, 1966 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Beaumont . Further assignments were made on April 13, 1982 to found the Diocese of Victoria in Texas and on December 12, 1986 to found the Diocese of Tyler .
On December 29, 2004, the Diocese of Galveston-Houston was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Cum pacis . The dioceses of Austin, Beaumont, Brownsville, Corpus Christi , Tyler and Victoria in Texas were subordinate to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston as suffragan dioceses.
