The Archdiocese of Baltimore ( Latin : Archidioecesis Baltimorensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the US state of Maryland .
history
The Archdiocese of Baltimore is the oldest American bishopric ; its archbishop has enjoyed a " prerogative of place " since 1858 , a ceremonial right of precedence over all other bishops in the United States, but which is not associated with the honorary title of primate . Baltimore was established on November 26, 1784 as the Apostolic Prefecture of the United States (Latin: Foederatarum Civitatum Americae Septemtrionalis ) and raised to a diocese on November 6, 1789. On April 8, 1808 raised to the archbishopric , the dioceses of Boston , Bardstown , New York and Philadelphia were separated from him and assigned to the new ecclesiastical province of Baltimore. As early as July 11, 1820, it lost further areas to the re-establishment of the dioceses of Charleston and Richmond , which were assigned to more areas of the Archdiocese of Baltimore on August 15, 1858. After the diocese of Wilmington had been separated on March 3, 1868 , the archdiocese changed its name to Baltimore-Washington on July 22, 1939. After the Archdiocese of Washington had been separated as an independent diocese on November 15, 1947, the old name Archdiocese of Baltimore was used again.
Today the diocese territory includes Allegany County , Anne Arundel Counties , Baltimore City and Baltimore Counties , Carroll County , Frederick County , Garrett County , Harford County , Howard County, and Washington County .
Baltimore has two auxiliary bishops. The ecclesiastical province includes the Diocese of Arlington , the Diocese of Richmond , the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Diocese of Wilmington .
