The Archdiocese of Miami ( Latin : Archidioecesis Miamensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Miami , Florida (USA).

The archbishopric includes the areas of Broward County , Miami-Dade County, and Monroe County . It is the sponsor of several private schools, including St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale .

history

The Diocese of Miami was detached from the Diocese of Saint Augustine on May 25, 1958 and was then subordinate to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan . On February 10, 1962, it was assigned as a suffragan diocese of the ecclesiastical province of Atlanta .

On March 2, 1968, areas were separated from the territory of the Diocese of Miami for the establishment of the Dioceses of Orlando and Saint Petersburg and Miami was elevated to an archbishopric with a metropolitan seat. On June 16, 1984, further areas were separated to establish the dioceses of Palm Beach and Venice , which in turn were subordinate to him as suffragan dioceses.
