Located in the United States , the Archdiocese of New Orleans ( Latin : Archidioecesis Novae Aureliae ) is a diocese and metropolitan seat of the Roman Catholic Church with its seat in New Orleans , Louisiana .
history
The forerunner of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is on April 25, 1793 by Pope Pius VI. from the Archdiocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana , Cuba , founded Diocese of Louisiana and the Two Floridas (Saint Louis of New Orleans) . The first bishop was the Cuban Luis Ignatius Peñalver y Cárdenas . On July 18, 1826 the diocese was by Leo XII. renamed the Diocese of New Orleans. Pope Pius IX elevated the diocese to an archdiocese on July 19, 1850. The first archbishop was the Frenchman Anthony Blanc .
There were numerous assignments of territory from which new dioceses were founded. Suffragan dioceses are Alexandria , Baton Rouge , Houma-Thibodaux , Lafayette , Lake Charles and Shreveport .
The seminaries of Notre Dame and St. Joseph as well as the Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) , Loyola University New Orleans and the Our Lady of Holy Cross College (OLHCC) are assigned to the Archdiocese .
